Osteoarthritis of the hip
Osteoarthritis of the hip is part of the degenerative process, perhaps more commonly known as ‘wear and tear’ The cartilage that surrounds the surface of the hip joint becomes worn and this in turn leads to inflammation, pain, stiffness and ultimately reduced function.
As osteoarthritis progresses, the bony surfaces are also susceptible to degeneration so that the bone surfaces are no longer smooth and may develop small bony processes called osteophytes. This in turn can create friction and inflammation.
What causes Osteoarthritis of the hip?
This condition is often triggered following a specific injury but more commonly is the result of repetitive forces exerted by the hip joint over a long period of time. In many people it is not possible to identify a causative factor and is simply part of their genetics and/or influenced by the normal aging process.

- Pain in the front of the hip, buttock or groin
- Reduced range of movement/stiffness of the hip
