The main job of the gluteal muscles is to extend and laterally rotate the hip (lift the leg backwards and turn the hip outwards) and to extend the trunk. This really means that we are using the gluteal muscles constantly while we are upright. Perhaps the high demand on this part of the anatomy, coupled with the complex system of muscles, tendons, ligaments and nerves in this area make it particularly susceptible to injury
