Ankle

The ankle is the region where the foot and leg meet and is made up of three joints; the talocrural joint, the subtalar joint and the tibiofibular joint. The main bones in the ankle joint are the talus (in the foot) and the tibia and fibula (in the lower leg).

Your ankle ligaments provide stability and the muscles and tendons provide movement. The main movements of the ankle are to push the foot away from and pull it towards the leg.

Due to the load exerted through this joint (i.e. the whole of the body above it) and the complexity of the joint, injuries are common and can be debilitating. The most prevalent ankle injuries are sprains and fractures.
