Adductor/Groin strain
An adductor strain is more commonly referred to as a groin strain. The adductors are a group of muscles which originate from the groin area and a strain usually involves very small tears in one or more of the tendons or muscle bellies. In more severe cases these muscles may be completely ruptured.
What causes an adductor/groin strain?
An injury of this kind is usually the result of a sudden shortening or lengthening of the adductor muscle such as rapid acceleration during running, kicking a football or quick directional changes for example. A groin strain therefore occurs most often during sports such as football, hockey or gymnastics but can also result from cycling and walking, or for no obvious reason at all.
What are the symptoms of an adductor/groin strain?
Symptoms may include one or more of the following:
- Sharp pain or pulling sensation in the groin or inner thigh region
- Tenderness to touch in the painful area
- Difficulty & increased pain on walking & running
- Bruising in the groin/inner thigh region
- Stiffness
- Swelling in the groin
