Iliotibial Band (ITB) Syndrome

Iliotibial band syndrome is relatively common, can be very painful at times and usually affects runners. The illiotibial band is a thick band of fascia extending from the pelvis to the outside of the knee. The band is crucial to stabilising the knee during running. The continual rubbing of the band on the outside of the femur (thigh bone), combined with the repeated bending and straightening of the knee causes inflammation and pain, usually on the outside of the knee.

What causes Iliotibial band syndrome?

ITB syndrome is most common in runners but can result from any activity that causes the leg to turn inward repeatedly. Worn out trainers or running shoes can also be a big contributing factor, as well as running downhill, on banked surfaces or simply running too many miles. Unlike many other running related injuries, ITB syndrome affects seasoned runners almost as much as beginners.

What are the symptoms of Iliotibial band syndrome?

Symptoms may include one or more of the following:

  • Stinging or pain on the outside of the leg just above or below the knee joint
  • Tenderness to touch along the length of the outside of the thigh
  • Pain during activity, particularly running, often persisting once activity has ceased
  • Swelling around the knee
