Anterior Knee pain

Anterior knee pain means pain which is experienced over the front of the knee. This problem is very common through various age groups and can be the result of numerous factors. Anterior knee pain is most often aggravated by prolonged sitting with the knee bent, climbing the stairs, squatting, running and jumping activities.

What causes anterior knee pain?

There are many causes of anterior knee pain which may include:

  • Strained tendons (tendonitis)
  • Osteoarthritis of the knee
  • Damage to the cartilage that lines the underside of the kneecap (chondromalacia patellae).
  • Compromised foot position such as flat feet for example
  • Weakness of the thigh muscles
  • Inflammation of the bursa inside the knee (bursitis)

What are the symptoms of anterior knee pain?

Symptoms may include one or more of the following:

  • Ache/pain around the front of the knee
  • Ache/pain at the front of the knee underneath the kneecap
  • Increased severity of pain on activity
  • Stiffness
  • Swelling around the front of the knee
