Plantar Fasciitis

Plantar faciitis usually causes pain underneath your foot. Your plantar fascia is a strong band of tissue that stretches from your heel to the middle bones of your foot. Its’ main jobs are to support the arch on the inside of your foot and to act as a shock-absorber in your foot during activities such as running, jumping and walking. Plantar faciitis is thought to be the inflammation of this tissue.

What causes Plantar faciitis?

Plantar faciitis is usually the results of lots of tiny injuries or tears (micro-trauma) to this tissue. This often happens if you have recently increased the intensity of your exercise regime, changed the surface on which you are exercising, training in old or non-supportive shoes or if you have a compromised biomechanical foot position such as flat arches/over-pronation.

Planter faciitis may also be associated with problems of the achilles tendon and is also considered to be part of the natural aging process.

What are the symptoms of Plantar faciitis?

Symptoms may include one or more of the following:

  • Pain anywhere on the underside of your heel
  • Significant pain on taking your first step of the morning
  • Increased amounts of pain on taking your first step after a long period of rest
  • Increased pain on sudden stretching of the foot
