Ankle Sprain
An ankle sprain or sprained ankle is an injury to one or more of the ankle ligaments, resulting in a partial tear or less often a complete rupture of the ligament/s. Ligaments attach bone to bone and provide stability to a joint.
What causes an ankle sprain?
An ankle sprain happens when one or more of your ligaments have been over-stretched, twisted or torn. This is usually the result of an excessive force being applied to the ankle joint such as a fall which may involve uneven surfaces, a tackle during contact sport or a twisting injury during dancing or racket sport such as tennis or squash for example
What are the symptoms of an ankle sprain?
Symptoms may include one or more of the following:
- Pain around the ankle
- Swelling of the ankle
- Stiffness and loss of movement
- Difficulty walking and weight-bearing on the affected leg
- Sensation of the ankle ‘giving way’
