Biceps and Triceps tendinopathy

Tendons are tough bands of tissue that connect muscle to bone. Repetitive activities and overuse can injure tendons, leading to pain and impaired function. This is referred to as tendinopathy, previously referred to as tendonitis. Biceps and triceps tendinopathies are two separate conditions, however as their causes and pathology are similar they have been listed together for ease.

What causes biceps/triceps tendinopathy?

Tendinopathy is a common problem and the risk of developing this condition increases with age. It is more prevelent in people who routinely perform activities requiring repetitive overhead movements at work or during sport. Although less common, this also may occur traumatically due to a high force going through the tendon such as lifting heavy weights or falling on to an outstretched arm/hand. Tendinopathy can also be caused by other conditions, including rheumatic diseases.

What are the symptoms/effects of biceps/triceps tendinopathy

Symptoms may include one or more of the following:

  • Pain in the front of the elbow or upper arm (biceps)
  • Pain in the back of the elbow or upper arm (triceps)
  • Increased pain/weakness on activity e.g. carrying a heavy shopping bag (both)
  • Increased pain or difficulty performing biceps curls or chin ups (biceps)
  • Swelling at the front of the elbow (biceps), back of the elbow (triceps)
  • Increased pain or difficulty performing tricep extensions (triceps)
  • Weakness on attempting to straighten the arm, particularly overhead (triceps)

Physiotherapy treatment for biceps and triceps tendionpathy

Early physiotherapy treatment is essential to promote optimal recovery. Our specialist physiotherapists are very experienced in treating a variety of tendinopathies and will develop a unique rehabilitation program tailored to your specific needs in order to achieve the best results in the minimum number of sessions.

Physiotherapy treatment may include:

  • Exercise therapy to improve flexibility and strength
  • Ice therapy to reduce swelling and pain
  • Soft tissue massage to encourage fluid drainage to relieve pain and stiffness
  • Ultrasound treatment to enhance the healing process
  • Joint mobilisations
  • Advice on activity modification during recovery to reduce the risk of re-injury
