Biceps muscle tear
This is usually caused when the biceps muscle contracts suddenly due to an excessive amount of stress or pressure, usually resulting in pain and weakness. Weightlifters and other sportspeople who use the arm forcefully, or bending the elbow against resistance (such as chin ups) are the most commonly affected by this problem. Although not so common, biceps muscle tear may also be caused by gradual or repetitive trauma which places strain on the biceps tendon.
What are the symptoms/effects of a biceps muscle tear?
Symptoms of a biceps muscle tear may include one or more of the following:
- Sudden onset of pain in the front of the shoulder, upper arm or elbow
- Larger appearance of the torn bicep than the one on the opposite side
- Swelling
- Weakness or difficulty when trying to lift or bend your elbow
- Difficulty turning your palm upwards
- Reduced movement of your elbow and possibly shoulder
- Bruising

We will then begin to tailor a rehabilitation program around your specific needs to improve muscle strength and work towards returning you back to your sporting and everyday activities as early as possible.
Physiotherapy treatment may include:
- Ice therapy to reduce swelling and pain
- Exercise therapy to improve range of movement and strength
- Heat therapy to reduce pain and aid flexibility
- Soft tissue massage to reduce stiffness and encourage fluid drainage
- Advice on activity modification during recovery to reduce the risk of re-injury
