Cervical Postural Syndrome

This condition is characterised by a protruding chin and rounded shoulders of varying degrees. People commonly report burning or aching sensations across the neck and shoulders. Pain is often aggravated by maintaining one position for long periods.

What causes cervical postural syndrome?

Cervical postural syndrome is usually caused by adopting poor posture over a prolonged period of time. This may occur during sitting (e.g. at a computer or driving) or during everyday activities such as cooking and cleaning.

Muscle imbalance may also contribute to poor posture. Imbalance of muscles in the upper back and neck means that the main muscle in the front of your chest and the muscles in the back of the neck are shortened and tight. The muscles at the back of the shoulders and upper back are stretched and become weaker.

What are the symptoms/effects of cervical postural syndrome?

Symptoms are usually worse when poor posture is maintained for a long period of time and may include:

  • Dull ache
  • Pain in the neck , upper back or shoulders
  • Headaches
  • Referred pain/symptoms in the arm and/or hands
