Dequervain’s tenosynovitis
De quervain’s tenosynovitis is inflammation of the tendons on the outside (thumb side) of your wrist. This causes pain when turning the wrist, gripping or making a fist.
What causes De quervain’s tenosynovitis?
It is not known exactly what causes De quervain’s tenosynovitis, however, any activity requiring repetitive movements of the hand or wrist can aggravate the problem. Examples of such activities might include gardening, lifting children, knitting, preparing food or playing a musical instrument.
What are symptoms/effects of De Quervain’s tenosynovitis?
The symptoms of De Quervain’s tenosynovitis may include:
- pain and tenderness of the wrist beneath the base of the thumb
- Reduced function
- swelling
- redness
Physiotherapy treatment for De Quervain’s tenosynovitis
Following assessment your physiotherapist at Cleethorpes Physio Clinic will identify the cause of irritation of the thumb tendons and from there will work together with you to develop an individualised rehabilitation program to correct wrist and thumb positions, range of movement and strength of the wrist and hand. We aim to offer you sufficient advice in order to prevent future problems. Physiotherapy treatment may include:
- Strength and flexibility exercises
- Advice on thumb or forearm splints
- Ultrasound treatment to enhance healing
- Ice therapy to reduce pain and swelling
- Advice on ergonomic assessment of your workstation and undertaking of tasks
- Exercises to improve fine motor control and dexterity – designed to help your hand work in ways that mirror your work tasks and sport activities.
