Golfers Elbow

Golfers elbow, also referred to as medial epicondylitis and is believed to be an inflammatory condition arising around the medial epicondyle (small bony prominence at the bottom of the humerus bone) of the elbow. It is similar to tennis elbow but the symptoms are generally experienced on the inside of the elbow.

The front of the forearm contains several muscles that are involved with flexing the fingers, thumb and wrist. The tendons of these muscles come together in one sheath, which is inserted into the medial epicondyle of the humerus at the elbow joint. In response to minor injury, overuse, or sometimes for no obvious reason at all, this point of insertion becomes inflamed.

What causes Golfers Elbow?

Activities that are thought to contribute to Golfers Elbow all include repetitive use of muscles which flex the fingers, wrist and forearm and this may include strenuous activity at the gym or even prolonged desk work for example.

What are the symptoms of Golfers Elbow?

Symptoms may include one or more of the following:

  • Tenderness and pain on the inside of your elbow
  • Occasionally you may experience swelling around the elbow
  • Increased pain on bending the wrist, grasping and turning the palm downwards
  • At times pain may spread down the forearm.
