The affected body part is dipped in to paraffin wax for a few seconds, removed and then this process is repeated up to 5 times in order that the wax cools and seals in some of the heat.
A towel is usually then applied to the waxed area to further enhance the effects. The wax is then removed after approximately 20 minutes and the soft wax can be used for exercise therapy. Hot wax treatment can be very effective in the treatment of arthritic pains in the hands or feet.
The rationale for such is that Heat is temporarily sealed in by the wax, helping to reduce pain, stiffness and muscle spasm by increasing the circulation to the area being treated.
