Osteoarthritis (OA) of the knee
The knee joint is one of the joints most commonly affected by arthritis. Osteoarthritis causes damage and wear to the surface of the bones, the cartilage becomes rough and thin and the bone at the end of the joint grows outwards, often forming bony spurs called osteophytes. In response the joint becomes swollen and the overall result of this process is reduced movement, pain and limited function.
What causes osteoarthritis of the knee?
Anybody can get OA although increased risk factors may include:
- Age – late 40’s or older
- Gender – OA is generally more prevalent & severe in females than males
- Weight – being overweight may increase your chances of developing & progressively worsening OA
- Family History – If close relatives have OA you are more likely to develop it
- Previous injury – A previously torn cartilage, cruciate ligament injury or surgery to the knee my result in OA later in life
- Joint disease – OA can develop as the result of other joint diseases such as Rheumatoid arthritis or gout for example
What are the symptoms of osteoarthritis of the knee?

- Pain around the knee joint which usually worsens with activity
- Stiffness of the knee joint & reduced movement
- Swelling around the front &/or back of the knee
- Crepitus – a grinding sensation when you move the knee
