Osteochondritis Dissecans
What causes Osteochondritis Dissecans?
Osteochondritis Dissecans (OCD) is a rare disorder which can affect any joint but is most commonly found in the knee. Cracks form in the cartilage and the subchondral bone underneath. Sometimes these cracks can result in lose bodies which may float around in the knee joint causing pain and locking, amongst other things. Although adolescents are most at risk because the bones are still growing, this condition can also affect adults. This problem may be the result of a trauma, overuse such as in sport, compromised foot position or ligament weakness for example.
What are the symptoms of Osteochondritis Dissecans?
Symptoms may include one or more of the following:
- Vague aching joint pain
- Swelling of the knee joint
- A ‘clunk’ feeling is often described on bending or straightening the knee
- Gradual onset of pain
- Pain relieved with rest and worsened with activity
