Quadriceps strain/rupture
The quadriceps is made up of four separate muscles at the front of the thigh which act to straighten the knee and flex the hip.
Quadricep injuries tend to occur most often in sports which require quick acceleration or increased running speed, extended kicking activities or persistent jumping or a direct blow to the front of the thigh for example. The severity of a quadricep injury can range from a mild strain of the muscle or tendon, to a complete rupture. Complete ruptures are much less common & may require surgery. Although less frequent, quadriceps injuries do not only result from sport but may arise from sudden increases in your activity levels geerally.
What causes a quadricep strain/rupture?
People who have had a previous quadricep injury may be more prone to re-injury, particularly if sufficient rehabilitation was not undertaken the first time. An injury of this kind is usually the result of a sudden shortening or lengthening of the quadricep muscle.
What are the symptoms of a quadricep strain/rupture?
Symptoms may include one or more of the following:
Strain:
Mild pain, twinge or tightness in the front of the thigh
Mild discomfort on walking on running but often able to continue with activity
Severe strain:
Pain is felt immediately upon injury & symptoms as above
Tenderness to touch on the front of the thigh
Bruising
Rupure:
- Immediate burning or stabbing pain
- Inability to walk without pain
- A lump of muscle tissue in the region of the tear
- Bruising
