Rectus Abdominus tendinopathy
The rectus abdominus muscle, often referred to as the abs, is a paired muscle running vertically on each side of the front of the abdomen. It is an important abdominal muscle and is also responsible for flexing the lumbar spine (lower back), a sit-up or crunch for example. The origin of this muscle is from the pubic bone and tendinopathy arises when this tendon is damaged.
What causes Rectus Abdominus tendinopathy?
Rectus abdominis tendinopathy is usually caused by overuse of the rectus abdominis tendon during activities such as excessive sit ups. Repetitive use of the rectus abdominis may result in small microscopic tears in the tendon.
What are the symptoms of Rectus Abdominus tendinopathy?
Symptoms may include one or more of the following:
- Pain just above the genitals where the muscle attaches to the pelvic bone
- Increased pain on activity such as sit-ups or plank for example
