Repetitive strain injuries
Repetitive strain injury (RSI) may also be known as Cumulative Trauma Disorder (CTD) or Occupational Overuse syndrome. These are the concepts that may link the use of the arm to injury or disease.
The basis for this condition is the concept that an individual can overuse a tool, such as a computer keyboard or musical instrument for example, in a way that causes tissue damage of the nerves, muscles and tendons, leading to pain. The condition mostly affects parts of the upper body, such as the forearm, elbow, wrist, hands, neck and shoulders, and may also cause stiffness and swelling.
What causes Repetitive Strain Injuries?
It is thought that these injuries are caused when stress is placed on a joint due to the same action being performed over and over again, some examples might include typing, clicking a computer mouse or even sports related such as repetitive jumping in basketball for example.
