Scoliosis
Scoliosis is an abnormal curvature of the spine. The bend can occur at any point along the spine although the most common areas are the thoracic spine (chest level) and lumbar spine (lower back). In mild cases this curvature is barely noticeable and does not cause symptoms. However, in more severe cases a very clear or shape of the spine can be noted and causes pain and other symptoms.
What causes a scoliosis?
The possible causes of scoliosis are:
Congenital: a defect in formation of the spinal column before birth
Degenerative: caused or worsened with degenerative changes or arthritis
Idiopathic: no known cause
Neurological: scoliosis is due to a neurological condition
Scheuermann: structural curvature which develops before puberty and deteriorates during adolescence
Syndromic: occurring as part of a recognised syndrome such as Marfanps, Rett or Bealeps Syndromes for example
