Spondylolisthesis
Spondylolisthesis is the forward displacement of a vertebra in relation to the vertebra below. In the majority of cases it is the L5 vertebra that slips forward relative to S1.What causes a spondylolisthesis? Most often spondylolisthesis are caused by degenerative or arthritic changes, or a traumatic injury which may involve a fracture to another part of the vertebra, allowing it to slip forward out of position.
Much less frequently a spondylolisthesis may be the result of a pathological condition resulting in a bone defect such as from a tumour for example. In such cases physiotherapy is not indicated and medical attention is required immediately.
What are the symptoms of a spondylolisthesis?
Symptom severity can be variable and may include one or more of the following:
- Lower back pain
- Lower back stiffness
- Pain worsened with housework & exercise, particularly bending backwards
- Referred pain to the buttocks, legs & feet
- Pins & needles &/or numbness in the buttocks, legs & feet.
Very rarely people experience sexual dysfunction &/or bowel/bladder abnormalities. If you are experiencing any of these problems you should seek medical advice immediately.
Physiotherapy treatment for a spondylolisthesis
A spondylolisthesis often causes surrounding soft tissue to become tight and weak and may very likely affect other levels of the back. Physiotherapy treatment will be focussed around increasing stability and strength in your back in order that you can achieve increased flexibility and function.
Following a thorough assessment our specialist physiotherapists will ensure your rehabilitation program is structured around your individual needs.
Physiotherapy treatment may include:
- Heat therapy to increase extensibility of surrounding soft tissues
- Mobilisation techniques above &/or below the slip to reduce pain
- Postural advice to reduce pain
- Acupuncture to reduce pain
- Core strengthening exercises to reduce pain & increase function
- Ultrasound therapy
