Sterno-clavicular (SC) joint strain

The sterno-clavicular joint is the joint between the clavicle (collar bone) and sternum (chest bone). It is important because it helps to support the shoulder and links the bones of the arm and shoulder to the vertical skeleton. Because the ligaments of this joint are very strong, dislocation and major injury are rare. A strain involves the stretching of the soft tissue and ligaments around the sterno-clavicular joint.

What causes a sterno-clavicular joint strain?

Injuries of this type are usually caused by indirect force, i.e. something hitting the shoulder very hard and the shoulder is pushed in and rolled either forwards or backwards, causing injury to the SC joint. This type of injury may be sustained during a road traffic accident, contact sports or falling heavily on to an outstretched arm.

What are the symptoms of a sterno-clavicular joint strain?

Symptom severity may include one or more of the following:

  • Pain in the area of the injury and also the shoulder
  • Shoulder stiffness
  • Clicking, popping or grating sensation

If you have dislocated your SC joint, pain will usually be much more severe and you may experience shortness of breath, difficulty swallowing and tightness in the throat. If this is the case you should seek urgent medical attention.
