Trapped Nerve
A trapped nerve as it is commonly known might be more accurately described as irritation of the nerve at some point along the nerves pathway. This can be caused by various structures and may present as pain, pins and needles, numbness or even weakness. If the nerve irritation is in your neck it is most likely that these symptoms will be experienced somewhere in your shoulder, arm or hand.
What causes a trapped nerve?
The most common causes of a trapped or irritated nerve in the neck are bulging discs, muscle spasm or degenerative changes. This may happen following a trauma or injury to the neck or more commonly as a result of prolonged postures involving sitting at a desk or driving for example. Rarely other more serious conditions may be causing your symptoms and your Physiotherapist will ensure to undertake a thorough assessment and refer you on to another medical professional is this is indicated at any point.
