Trochanteric Bursitis
The trochanteric bursa is a fluid filled sack within the hip joint, the main job of such being to provide cushioning and reduce friction therefore encouraging free movement. Trochanteric bursitis is the inflammation of this bursa, it is often related with osteoarthritis of the hip and causes pain and reduced function.
What causes Trochanteric bursitis?
This condition is usually caused by repetitive stress being placed on the trochanteric bursa during activities such as walking, running and jumping for example. The incidence of this is often increased with the aging process and linked to osteoarthritis. Occasionally it can be caused by a direct blow to the hip such as a fall on to a hard surface for example.
What are the symptoms of Trochanteric bursitis?
Symptoms may include one or more of the following:
- Pain on the outer aspect of the hip, sometimes travelling down the outside of the leg to the knee.
- Pain often aggravated in side lying
- Occasionally the hip may appear swollen
- Pain aggravated with activities such as walking, running, climbing stairs and sitting cross legged for example
