Whiplash

Whiplash associated disorder or whiplash syndrome is the name given to a group of neck pain syndromes most commonly resulting from rear-end vehicle collisions. Permanent damage is uncommon following a whiplash injury.

What causes Whiplash?

Whiplash is commonly caused by the rapid and violent backward movement, followed by forward thrust of the head and neck. Often this is the result of a rear end motor collision which may involve sudden deceleration when one or both vehicles have been moving. Whiplash may also be caused by a sudden blow to the head during contact sport for example or following a slip or fall where the head is rapidly jolted backwards.

It is important to consult your GP as soon as possible following your injury, to ensure you get the appropriate treatment and make a full recovery.

What are the effects/symptoms of Whiplash?

Pain is usually experienced in the back of the neck, often made worse on head/neck movements and may radiate in to the head, shoulders, arms and shoulder blades.
Other, less common symptoms may include:

  • Visual disturbances
  • Problems with balance
  • Dizziness
  • Weakness in the arms and hands
  • Pins and needles/numbness
